History of DMU

1、Guandong Medical College (May 1947- March 1949) Dalian Medical University was founded in 1947 as Guandong Medical College two years prior to the People’s Republic of China was founded. It is the oldest formal medical college in the Northeast of China. The opening ceremony of Guandong Medical College was held on May 4, 1947, and the first enrolment was 203. The president was Wang Bujun, the associate director of Department of Health of Northeast.

2、Medical College of Dalian University (March 1949 – July 1950) In October 1948, based on the requirement from Central Government and Northeast Administration, Dalian City Government decided to establish Dalian University constituted of College of Engineering, College of Medicine, and Department of Russian Language. One year later, Dalian University was established in March 1949, and Guandong Medical College was merged into Dalian University. Dr. Shen Qizhen was first Dean of the College of Medicine.

3、Dalian Medical College (July 1950 – July 1969) Dalian University was separated into three independent colleges: Dalian Engineering College, Dalian Medical College, and Dalian Russian Language College. Dalian Medical College became an independent college on July 23, 1950. The president was Shen Qizhen.

4、Zunyi Medical College (July 1968 – December 1978) In 1965, Ministry of Health of China decided to move Dalian Medical College to Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, to support developing the area. Dalian Medical College was a moved to Zunyi and named as Zunyi Medical College in 1969.

5、Re-establishment of Dalian Medical College (December 1978 – January 1994) Re-establishment of Dalian Medical College in original location at Dalian was approved by Department of State in December 1978. The first enrolment of 106 started their study on December 18, 1978, and the opening ceremony of Re-establishment of Dalian Medical College was held January 17, 1979.

6、Dalian Medical University (January 1994 – present) Due to fast growing, Dalian Medical College was renamed as Dalian Medical University, proved by the State Commission of Education on January 17, 1994. The news conference and unveiling ceremony were held on March 18, 1994.

The 7、new campus at Lushun District To create a larger and more effective campus, Dalian Medical University was moved to Lushun District, 25 km away from old campus. The foundation laying ceremony was held on November 8, 2005, and the whole university was moved to new campus completely in August 2007. The total area of the new campus is 1,510,000 square meter including 520,000 construction area. Faculty Apartment Building area was located 3 km away north.

The international communications and cooperations of Dalian Medical university are now becoming active and extensive, with the establishment of partnerships with more than 72 universities, 38 institutes and corresponding organizations of 26 different countries and areas, such as New York State University of U.S.A., Curtin University of Technology, Victoria University in Australia, University of South Australia, the University of Adelaide, Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy in Ukraine, Saint-Petersburg State Pavlov Medical University, the University of Bolton in U.K., Fachhochschule Dortmund University of Applied Science, Gunma University of Japan, Tokyo Medical and Dental University of Japan, Our Lady of Fatima University, Philippines, Chonnam National University in Korea. Dalian Medical University carried out academic communication with experts of United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Korea, as well as the area of Hongkong, Macao, and Taiwan. At the same time, the university jointly carried out international cosmetology senior medical teaching with Malaysia Cosmetology College and International Medical Cosmetology Association.

Dalian Medical University jointly created photography specialty with Sino-Japan Everlasting Pease Association, especially started a beginning of the artistic specialty created through Chinese and foreign cooperation and set in medical academies. During these years, international joint educational programs have been explored, and now the university have started the running school program and credit exchange program with 17 universities from 9 countries ( U.K., Ukraine, Philippines, Australia and etc.), until the end of 2006, there 248 students of Dalian Medical University have joined the international joint educational programs.The university has a joint education program in stomatology and clinical medicine with Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy in Ukraine, and establish a postgraduate program of photography with Bolton University in U.K., etc.

During the course of international communication, Dalian Medical University accepted the help from foreign advanced devices and equipment, teaching and scientific research facilities, etc., also ,by various means, sent teachers, learners abroad for further study, cooperative scientific research, academic communication, and friendly visit, meanwhile invited foreign experts, learners to come to visit, give lectures, carry out academic communication, also particularly invited foreign experts and learners who contributed much to teaching, scientific research, and medical work as visiting professors and lecture professors.

In many years Dalian Medical University, through sending, invitation and many other means, absorbed and introduced foreign advanced technological knowledge and achievements, subsequently gained omnidirectionally and high-level development meanwhile contributed to social progress and development.

Dalian Medical University also recruited foreign students abroad and overseas students from Hongkong, Macao, and Taiwan offered them excellent living environment and study condition. Having been approved by the Education Department of Liaoning Province, the foreign students can be enrolled into every major available at present, and the candidates include undergraduates in medicine, junior college students, master programs and doctorate programs, refresher course students in medicine, and interns as well as Chinese Language learners. Now the university has MBBS courses in English for its foreign students. There are around 1000 short-term and long-term foreign students from 20 different foreign countries on the campus, more than any other university in Liaoning province.

Through international communication and cooperation, Dalian Medical University further realized the world-oriented as well as future-oriented teaching direction, promoted the development as a whole.

International Student

1. International Education College Overall Summary

Dalian Medical University (DMU) International Education College (IEC) was founded in 1985 on the basis of a language and a short-term advanced studies program. In 2004, the university established MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) in the English medium and initiated to recruit educated international students; this launched an evolutionary prospect in Dalian Medical University’s system expansion to international education. In June 2007, DMU International Education College became more driven to its purposes when it was evaluated by the National Education Board of China and became one of the thirty schools that excel in teaching international students in the English medium. In 2009, the university was led into a brand-new stage when it was approved by the national education board to become a Chinese government scholarship development school to international students, as well as being assessed to be an international education advanced unit in Liaoning Province. In 2011, China approved DMU to qualify in enrolling self-assessed government scholarship students, China-Russia humanity scholarship students, and China-America humanity scholarship students. In 2012, DMU was graded by Liaoning Education Department to be one of the five international education model facilities in Liaoning. In 2013, DMU was assessed to be the first batch of international education model university nationwide. In 2014, DMU was awarded the title “International Students Education Advanced Organization” in China.

2. Conditions of International Students

Scaling Over a decade, Dalian Medical University has shown extraordinary progress toward international education. To this date, there are 1260 international students enrolled in DMU with graduate students reaching to 12.5%. Our international students come from all across the five continents of the world for over 100 countries. DMU is listed the number one medical school in the Northeastern territory with the most international students and number of countries from where the students are enrolled; it also has the percentage of international students coming from a single country lower than 13%, which makes DMU International Education College a diverse multicultural environment that shows acceptance to all countries in the world. International education has become one of the most distinguished features of Dalian Medical University. Undergraduate

With the guidance concept of “human orientation, the pursuit of excellence, highlighting characteristics, cultivation of elites”, DMU regards undergraduate education as the most cardinal and fundamental mission. Centering on the teaching and focusing on elite cultivation, DMU undertakes the comprehensive and thorough reform of undergraduate education. Taking innovative asset cultivation mechanism as the point of breakthrough, emphasizing promoting connotation development, the University tries to improve the teaching quality and improve the influence, radiation and social serviceability.

DMU has 6 disciplines of Medicine, Science, Engineering, Management, Law, and Arts, including 21 enrolling undergraduate majors. Post-Graduate

As one of the first batch graduate recruiting institutes in China, Dalian Medical University started enrollment of the graduates in 1955. It has conferred more than 7000 master’s degree and doctoral degree in Medicine, Philosophy, Science, Management, Education and Law since it resumed admission in 1978. Up to May 2015, the Graduate School of Dalian Medical University has 3802 graduates, among which there are 267 Ph D. holders from the mainland, 20 oversea Ph.D. holders, 3296 mainland graduates, 143 oversea graduates, and 76 graduates from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Student pool covers nearly 150 national and international universities. In 2015, 1505 graduates (including 353 seven-year program postgraduates) and 78 Ph D. candidates were enrolled.

Today, Dalian Medical University has 4 postdoctoral research stations, 4 Level-I disciplines for Ph.D. degree in Biology, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine and Integrative Medicine; 37 level-II disciplines for Ph D degree; 9 level-I disciplines for master’s degree in Marxist Theory, Biology, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine, Stomatology, Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing; and also 61 level-II disciplines for master’s degree. In recent years, Dalian Medical University has focused on “improving the quality of graduate student education,” continuously adjusting and perfecting the graduate cultivation pattern, striving to create a strong academic atmosphere, stimulating graduates’ ability for innovative research.
